Description
The Village of Northport, Michigan is seeking qualified attorneys or law firms to provide comprehensive municipal legal services, including appointment as Village Attorney. The Village Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the Village Council, Village President, Village Manager, and Village boards, commissions, and departments.
Services include general municipal counsel; drafting, review, and interpretation of ordinances, resolutions, and contracts; advising on land use, zoning, and development matters; guidance on Open Meetings Act and Freedom of Information Act compliance; and representation in administrative or judicial proceedings as authorized by the Village Council.
The Village anticipates entering into a professional services agreement with the selected attorney or firm for an initial multi-year term, with renewal options at the discretion of the Village Council.

Requirements
Respondents must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan and in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience providing legal services to Michigan local governments
- Demonstrated knowledge of Michigan municipal law, including the General Law Village Act
- Experience advising public bodies on Open Meetings Act and Freedom of Information Act compliance
- Experience with zoning, land use, ordinance drafting, and development review
- Ability to attend Village Council meetings and provide timely legal advice to elected officials and staff
- Ability to manage conflicts of interest consistent with professional and ethical standards
- Professional liability (errors and omissions) insurance in an amount acceptable to the Village
